Brother Phil Hanyard is the current Evangelist and one of the Elders at Hampton Avenue Church of Christ in Milwaukee, WI. He started in the ministry by assisting preaching at prison ministries almost 20 years ago. In 2001, he was ordained as the Assistant Minister by Brother Quiller Harris, who was the Evangelist at Hampton Ave. Church of Christ at that time. Under the new leadership of Brother Barry Gainey as the Evangelist, Brother Phil Hanyard was ordained as one of the Elders at Hampton in 2013. In August of 2016, Brother Gainey accepted a new position in Kansas City and ordained Brother Hanyard as the Evangelist of Hampton also.
He has been married to his wife, Dawn Marie Hanyard, for over 27 years and they have two children, Sabrina and Joshua, who are both young adults.
Brother Phil Hanyard is currently attending Harding University’s Center for Distant Learning in Bible and Ministry. Bro. Hanyard has also attended the satellite school of the Sunset Bible Institute, which is located at the Brentwood Church of Christ campus in Milwaukee, WI. He has earned a certificate of completion of Old Testament Biblical studies, as well as several certificates of completion in New Testament Biblical studies.
He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He has an Associate’s Degree in Police Science. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He also has a Master’s in Organizational Management and Leadership.
He has recently retired (In February, 2017) from the Milwaukee Police Department after serving 25 years. He was a police officer for seven years. He was then promoted to the rank of sergeant and served in that capacity for seven years. He retired as a Lieutenant and served in that rank for eleven years. He has worked in several different work locations as a Lieutenant. He has worked at District One (Downtown), District Two (South side), District Three (North side), and retired from District Four (Northwest side). He has also worked at Central Booking (City Jail), Technical Communications Division (911 Center), Investigative Management Division (Administrative part of Detective Bureau), Central Investigations Bureau (Detective Bureau), and the Office of Community Outreach and Education.
Brother Hanyard can be heard preaching on the radio every Sunday at 10:30am and 4:30pm on Joy 1340 am and 97.8 fm. He also conducts marriage and general counseling. He has written a marital guideline called, “The Four F’s of Marriage.” He also has been known to MC several musical events around the brotherhood. He is a firm believer on preaching the word and allowing people to read it for themselves. He also believes in giving God the glory for everything in his life, edifying the church, and bringing souls to Christ.
Over the years, Brother Phil Hanyard had the vision to implement several ministries at Hampton Ave. Church of Christ. One of which is Evangelism Training Class. In this class an individual can be taught how to share the gospel with someone in a very clear and efficient way. Other ministries include the Men’s Retreat, Prayer Night, Retention Ministry, Crisis Ministry, and “Bring a Friend to Sunday School.”
